Continuing Education Programme

Across the developing world, managers and mid-level professionals working in the health and social development sectors face increasingly complex administrative and organizational challenges in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programmes and projects. In Pakistan, there are limited community-oriented, problem-focused, and practice-driven professional training and capacity-building opportunities that equip these professionals with the conceptual foundations, managerial competencies, and technical expertise required to effectively address complex operational demands.

The Continuing Education Programme, established in 1994 by the Department of Community Health Sciences at Aga Khan University, was developed in response to this critical need in Pakistan and across the region. The programme offers short courses ranging from 6 to 20 days in duration. Over the past 25 years, it has strengthened the capacities of national and international health and development professionals through core, customized (on-request), grant-supported, and follow-up training courses. These courses have been delivered both within Pakistan and internationally.

Over time, participation from international professionals has steadily increased, particularly from developing countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Tajikistan, Sudan, Syria, and Afghanistan. Enrollment has also expanded among professionals from government institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in Pakistan.

Goal

The overall goal of the Continuing Education Programme is to contribute to professional excellence in the health sector through the provision of short courses that develop personal and organisational capacity to effectively assess and address inequities in health and social determinants of health.

This programme is particularly useful for mid-level health and development workers, managers, researchers and planners working at different levels in government, NGOs, and international agencies. It is designed to benefit the participants, their parent organisations, programmes and the target populations they serve.
