Culture Health and Illness

Humans all over make sense of their worlds through the unique culture they are endowed with. But what is culture? And how does it get under our skin to create varied patterns of health and illness across the world. The experience of sickness entails a complex interplay between biological, socio-economic and cultural factors. This course will unpack these varied influences by introducing key concepts in medical anthropology, a field concerned with the comparative study of culture, health, and illness. The goal of the course is to build tools to identify and think critically about how cultural norms and issues of power dynamics are inextricably bound to health and illness.
