Department of Radiology

The Department of Radiology, as a part of the teaching hospital, organises a training programme for medical students which is supervised by designated radiology faculty. The department has a structured residency programme which inducts PGME trainees every year and fellowships in Vascular Interventional procedures, Women Imaging and Neuro-radiology. The Department also offers a structured Radiographers Training Programme. The induction criterion for this training programme is B.Sc. Degree (Graduate of Science with 14 years of education). The duration of the programme is two years. The Department is certified by the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) working under the regulatory requirements of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). For quality assurance and radiation safety, regular audits and inspections are conducted by PNRA. The department conforms to international-level standards on quality of care namely Joint Commission on International Accreditation for Hospitals and ISO 9001:2008.

The Department of Radiology offers 24/7 services that cater to the needs of inpatients, outpatients and outside referrals by providing the best possible and modern diagnostic facilities at the main campus and at off-campus facilities of  four secondary hospitals and Clifton Medical Services (CMS). It is also providing services to French Medical Institute for Children (FMIC), Kabul, Afghanistan through tele-radiology. The Department caters to approximately 18,000 patients a month. It is fortified with a team of Radiologists, Research faculty, Medical Physicists, Trained/Certified Radiographers and IT & support staff. Committed to service quality and following the needs of the time, the Department is moving towards film-less radiology and is equipped with Picture Archiving and Communicating System (PACS). The general radiography procedures inclusive of IVP and Flouro are carried out on Computed Radiography System (CR) and Digital Retrofit (DR) which has minimized the patient waiting time, radiation dose, report turnaround time, film rejection rate and film loss. It provides additional facility for simultaneous viewing of images by multiple users. Department of Radiology is using VRS (Voice Recognition System) to transcribe radiology reports which helps in decreasing report turnaround time and increase patient satisfaction with quality reporting. All of this has resulted in increased throughput and enhanced quality of patient care.
