The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) demonstrates AKU's mission, through population-oriented education, research and service activities. Its vision is to be a model of leadership in community-oriented population health and social development, with more emphasis on deprived populations i.e. women and children. The department’s mission is 'to strive for excellence in public health research, education and services for developing national and international leadership (human resource development) to address the community’s health needs and sufferings, and strengthen health systems'.

​The thematic research area of Population, Health and Poverty covers a range of sub themes such as women and child health; non-communicable diseases; environmental health; health systems (PHC, quality of services, health seeking behavior, social determinants of health and disease, equity and gender and e-health)​​.​ Read more about the department's research groups below.​
