Advanced Level Course on Assessment (ALC-A) in Health Professions Education (HPE)

The Course focuses on the purpose, design, implementation and evaluation of rigorous assessment plans as well as tasks, tools, and strategies relevant to assessment in HPE. There is particular emphasis on participants’ involvement within the context of their own profession and institution.

ALC-Assessment week 1

The intensive interactive one week (48 hours) will focus on development of assessment plans and tools for outcome-based assessment.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the students will be able to apply principles of best assessment practices based on best evidence available in literature for:

  • developing a blueprint for assessment;
  • using assessment for formative and summative purposes;
  • critiquing the available assessment tools and purpose(s) of assessment;
  • selecting appropriate assessment tools according to educational outcomes and context;

ALC-Assessment week 2

The course focuses on the purpose, design, implementation and evaluation of rigorous assessment plans including tasks, tools, and strategies relevant to HPE, with emphasis on the participant’s involvement within the context of their own profession and institution. The intensive 48 hours of interactive teaching and learning component will focus on the test and measurement, and the psychometric properties of the tools.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the students will be able to apply principles of best assessment practices based on best evidence available in literature to:

  • search literature for tools to assess all outcomes;
  • identify gaps in medical education literature where an outcome may not have valid or reliable tools to assess that particular Competency / Outcome(s);
  • develop practical and innovative assessment tools for missing areas that lead to enhanced learning; and
  • collect, analyze and interpret assessment data for monitoring, feedback and educational research;
  • use assessment data to inform students, curriculum, faculty and administration;
  • evaluate assessment strategies and assessment programmes

Eligibility

ALC-A is a core course for the Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) ; however it is also open to all health care professionals in Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry and Allied Health with a proven interest/responsibility and at least two years teaching experience in HPE. Other candidates with the following eligibility may also apply as per the selection criteria.

Duration

This is a sixteen-weeks course from August to November, 2017.

  • Six-week part time pre reading

  • Two-week full-time intensive face-to-face onsite component. (September 18 - 30, 2017)

  • Eight-week part-time independent study and written assignment an application-oriented project completion.

Assessment

The assessment in ALC-Assessment is divided into the following two components which have to be passed separately.

In the face-to-face component, assessment will be through:

  • continuous observation of participation and contributions,

  • individual and group assignments/presentations,

  • end-of-the-course assessment.

The final assessment would be based on completion and grading of an independent study and  2000-3000 words application-oriented project. The written assignment will be graded on the basis of application of knowledge and evidence based best solution in their own settings.

For satisfactory completion of the course requirements, students have to attain at least 55% scores in continuous assessment and the written assignments independently, with an overall aggregate of 60%

Educational Strategies

The course is highly participatory, offered through interactive plenaries, individual and group presentations and assignments, workshop formats, exercises, on-line and small group activities.
