​​​Guidelines for Student Presentation and Abstract Submission​

The 3rd Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Conference at AKU, aims to bring together faculty, students and academic staff to celebrate evidence-based teaching and promote good teaching and learning practices in higher education. In order to provide more voice and opportunities to students, this year's conference includes students as presenters.

We invite you to submit an abstract and present an original piece at the conference on November 27 & 28, 2019, relevant to the subtheme #4: Evidencing Students' Learning Experiences, so that your message may reach out to the conference participants (e.g. faculty, educational leaders and other students) in ways most unique to you. A prize will be awarded for the best presentation. 

 Presentation Formats:

 Traditional

  • Paper

  • ePoster

Creative

  • Spoken word

  • Theatrical production

  • Short film

  • Musical composition

  • Dance performance

  • Artwork

 Creative Abstract Submission Guidelines:

  • Entries are required to be in English

  • Individual entries: 150-200 words

  • Collaborative entries: 500-700 words

  • A single person can submit up to 4 abstracts

  • The abstracts must be drawn from evidence from the student's personal educational experiences

  • Clearly and concisely summarize your topic and mode of presentation

  • You should explain the purpose of the production, actual or potential implications, how it relates to the theme and subtheme, and provide evidence of and reflections on the topic

 ​Creative Presentation Guidelines:

All entries should be original and relevant to the theme of the conference, Evidencing Teaching Practices for Effective Learning in Higher Education

Submit with the names and email IDs of all team members (director, producer, actors, dancers etc.)

There are three different categories for creative presentations:

Spoken word

  • Spoken word is a piece of creative writing that is best delivered through oral performance, with emphasis on intonation.
  • Slam poem, TedTalk, etc.
  • The suggested duration is 1-4 minutes

Performative arts

  • Musical composition, dance, skit, etc.
  • The suggested duration is 2-5 minutes
  • The student will have to provide their own materials
  • For dance, theatre and spoken word, you may use costumes, props, music, and visual aids during your performance 

Visual arts

  • Film, live painting, sculpture, etc. 
  • The suggested duration is 2-3 minutes
  • Filmed entries should preferably be submitted in Mp4 format
  • Objectionable content, such as sex, nudity, explicit language, and graphic violence will not be accepted. Contact us for more details regarding what is objectionable.

The deadline for student abstract submissions is August 31, 2019. All submissions are double-blind peer reviewed on rigorous academic criteria. In case of a stark difference between the two reviewers' contents, the abstract will be sent to a third reviewer for the final decision. The authors will be notified of the outcome via email by September 26, 2019.

By submitting an abstract, you agree to present your production during the SoTL conference November 27-28 at the Stadium Road campus in Karachi (or virtually if presenting from abroad) and abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the organizing committee. You also understand that the committee has the right to change the terms and conditions and rules and regulations when they find it necessary.
