Dr Syeda Sadia Fatima
Advancing Metabolic Health, Genomics, and Medical Education in Pakistan
Dr Syeda Sadia Fatima, an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at the Aga Khan University's Medical College in Pakistan, is widely recognised for her contributions to metabolic health, genetics, and health professions education. She also Chairs the Haile T. Debas Teachers Academy at AKU. Her scholarly output, spanning over 100 research articles, reviews, editorials, and her authored book, has earned her more than 9000 citations and an h-index of 30 on Google Scholar. She has also been featured in Stanford University's Top 2% Most-Cited Scientists list, a testament to the global relevance of her work.
Dr Fatima's research interests span metabolic syndrome, the genetics and epigenetics of diabetes, obesity, reproductive health, and the developmental origins of disease. Her 2018 book, Emerging Trends in Metabolic Syndrome (Paramount Books), provides a comprehensive exploration of obesity, from pathophysiology and related disorders to the complex interplay between metabolic health, reproductive health, and emerging risk factors. Written to raise awareness about the growing obesity epidemic, the book remains a valuable resource for clinicians, researchers, and students.
Her academic background includes an MBBS, an MPhil, and a PhD in Physiology from Pakistan. She has completed several respected international research and education fellowships. These include advanced genomics training at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the NIH, the International FAIMER Fellowship (USA), the Fellowship of the International Union of Physiological Sciences, and recognition as a Senior Fellow of Advance HE (UK). She has further trained in global burden of disease estimation, digital health, and responsible conduct in the life sciences.
A committed educator, Dr Fatima, contributed to AKU's transition to online and blended learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, an experience she considers a milestone in her career. Her leadership and innovation in pedagogy have earned her several honours, including the Excellence in Teaching Award, Collaborative Award for Teaching and Mid-Career Researcher Award.
Beyond her research and teaching, Dr Fatima contributes actively to the global scientific community. She serves as a reviewer for leading journals, including Lancet Regional Health-Southeast Asia, Scientific Reports, Frontiers in Endocrinology, PLOS One, BMC Medical Education, and reviews grants for national and international research bodies. She is also a life member of key professional societies and serves as a Faculty Research Advisor at the International FAIMER Institute.
Reflecting on her journey, Dr Fatima attributes her growth to the mentorship, culture, and opportunities at AKU. Her advice to young researchers is simple and empowering: “Don't fear failure, step out of your comfort zone. Each challenge brings growth."
