Welcome to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Aga Khan University (AKU), Karachi, Pakistan. Pathology is a highly specialized field of medical discipline that engages in patient management to establish diagnosis through specialized laboratory testing and advices on treatment modalities. The department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at AKU assists health care professionals and patients in making optimal diagnostic decisions based on the latest diagnostic testing, using state-of-the-art instruments, highly qualified faculty, and trained laboratory staff.

Our department has five subspecialities to ensure high quality and relevant testing in each field. We offer a wide range of clinical services in Chemical Pathology, Haematology/Transfusion Medicine, Histopathology, Microbiology, and Molecular Pathology. The clinical laboratory is equipped with state of the art Biosafety Level 2 and Level 3 labs that are accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) and College of American Pathologists (CAP). Our national footprint consists of a network of thirteen Stat laboratories and more than two hundred phlebotomy centers across Pakistan.

We integrate service with medical teaching and training at graduate and post graduate levels. We offer comprehensive five year, CPSP approved training programmes in four subspecialities. With more than 55 highly specialized faculty members, we are proud to be recognized as the destination of choice for training throughout the country. Our programme features basic core curriculum, clinical applications, bench techniques, laboratory administration and laboratory quality management skills. Our graduates are currently serving in leadership positions at national and international organizations. More than 60 percent of the existing faculty are alumni of our own programme. Additionally, the clinical laboratory runs a structured medical technologist-training programme which contributes towards the development of a qualified and skilled laboratory technologist work force at a national and regional level.

Research is an integral part of the tripartite vision of the department. We foster a culture of research by providing infrastructure to assist faculty and residents in grant management. The department also offers seed money grants to competitive research projects submitted by the residents. Over the years our faculty have earned global recognition in research and are recipients of national and international research awards, contributing to impactful translational research output. Leading research themes can be found at https://www.aku.edu/mcpk/pathology/Pages/research.aspx.
