Prof, Afia Zafar

Welcome to the webpage of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Aga Khan University (AKU), Karachi, Pakistan. This department is a very dynamic and academic unit. It is also the largest Department of Pathology in the country with over fifty five strong faculty. Our faculty have diverse interests, each serving the country in their own specialty as lead researcher/scientist, educator, diagnostician and clinician. Research is the integral part of the vision of the department. We foster research culture by providing opportunity and support to residents and faculty members. As a result, our faculty have active national and international collaborations with stakeholders and have contributed to impactful translational research output. Simultaneously, our faculty are also engaged in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate teaching programs. The department has a structured postgraduate training program with the aim to prepare leading pathologists for the future. Our graduates are currently serving in lead positions at national as well as international levels. More than sixty percent of the existing faculty are alumni of our own program. Additionally, our clinical laboratory also has a robust medical technologist-training program which contributes to our ever increasing need. The AKU clinical laboratory is accredited by both the Joint Commission International (JCI) and College of American Pathologists (CAP). Through these state of the art laboratories, we offer a wide range of clinical services in chemical pathology, hematology and transfusion medicine, histopathology, microbiology, and molecular pathology.  We provide access to quality pathology services through our thirteen Stat Laboratories and more than two hundred phlebotomy centers across Pakistan.
