Paediatric Neuro-Oncology

In Pakistan with the population of nearly 200 million, there is very scarce data available for children with brain tumours. Paediatric Neuro-Oncology (PNO) is the most neglected field in paediatric oncology and the outcome, as already mentioned is very dismal, when compared to the developed world. There are only two centres in Pakistan dealing with children with brain tumours. Both centres are located in Karachi. Out of the 26 paediatric oncologists all over Pakistan there is only 1 trained and dedicated Paediatric Neuro-oncologist (AKUH). Among these two centres, one of them being Aga Khan University Hospital has all the related multidisciplinary team for PNO under one roof. Moreover, we are working in collaboration with The Hospital of Sick children, Canada and St Jude’s Hospital USA, the leaders of PNO across the globe for the last 8 years to improve the survival outcome of children with brain tumours and advancement of knowledge in this highly complex field. We have National and international multi-institutional paediatric Brain tumour boards for updated knowledge and better management.

This one year academic clinical and/or research fellowship will provide the candidate an opportunity to train at Aga Khan University Hospital in our Paediatric Neuro-oncology fellowship programme, which will be the only Pediatric Neuro-oncology programme in the whole country. Fellows will have options to pursue a 12-month clinical training programme with opportunities to develop clinical academic skills necessary to practice as an expert consultant in pediatric neuro-oncology.
