Research Groups: Human Nutrition

Deficiency of micronutrients, such as folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 can lead to a number of diseases.  In 2001, a research group comprising Dr M. Perwaiz Iqbal, Dr Khawar Kazmi and Dr Mohammad Ishaq embarked on studying the role of these vitamins against the development of coronary artery disease in Pakistani population.Later on, Dr Najaf Ali Nadeem, Dr Ghulam Nabi Kakepoto and Dr Rehana Siddiqui also joined the group to investigate the deficiency of these micronutrients and other trace elements and the ensuing effects on Pakistani population.

Current Projects

  • Role of vitamins B6, B12 and folate, glutathione and cytokines in the development of coronary artery disease in Pakistani population.
  • Effect of folic acid on plasma homocysteine levels and arterial endothelial function among diabetics with acute myocardial infarction.
  • Folate, B12 and homocysteine in rheumatoid arthritis.
