Purpose of the Course

This course is about ways in which humans share and make sense of their knowledge and experiences and shape cultures through digital media technologies, and is meant to enable students to learn the theory and practice of digital storytelling, an essential skill for social scientists. Students will learn a range of techniques to write, produce and publish stories using digital media technologies, including the basics of visual design and interactivity. They will also reflect on the ethics of digital storytelling in the context of social development.

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Examine the evolution of the storytelling tradition, and the relationships between audience, story, the context, visual design, and digital media

  • Identify elements of a good story, write scripts, design storyboards, shoot, edit and publish digital stories

  • Identify and use a variety of software and hardware as they relate to digital storytelling

  • Conduct research to identify and analyze problems to tell impactful digital stories

  • Critically examine the ethics of designing and using digital stories

  • Teach themselves any new technologies for digital storytelling
