Transforming Neonatal Care: Current Insights and Future Directions for Low-Middle Income Countries


 

Section of Chemical Pathology, Dept. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine hosted a Rare Links webinar on June 10, 2025, in collaboration with Pak-IMD-Net and the IFCC–ISNS Global NBS Taskforce. Experts from Pakistan, South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya shared regional insi​​​ghts on advancing equitable newborn screening in LMICs. The session highlighted policy gaps, implementation challenges, and the importance of cross-border collaboration to scale sustainable NBS programs. The expert panel emphasized integrating screening into national health systems, improving advocacy, and building capacity across regions. The webinar served as a valuable step toward strengthening global partnerships for universal newborn screening.​


Objectives

  • Highlight regional innovations, challenges, and lessons learned in implementing Newborn Screening (NBS) programs in LMICs.
  • Promote cross-continental, South–South collaborations to support training, research, and policy development.
  • Strengthen alignment with the Global Taskforce's vision for Universal Newborn Screening (UNBS) through shared learning and joint initiatives.​
