​Medical Trainee Technologist Programme

We offer a one-year Medical Technologist Training Programme that seeks to build the skills of young laboratory professionals and recruit the best candidates from the programme. This training includes classroom/e-lectures and hands-on bench training. Eligible candidates are those having a BSc/BS/MSc in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or an equivalent qualification such as BS/MSc in microbiology, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, or a relevant degree in clinical diagnostics, with a minimum of first division or CGPA 2.5+/4. Fresh graduates in the past two years are preferred.  
Applicants are selected through an intense process of written assessment followed by a panel interview of shortlisted candidates. The site of training will be the clinical laboratory in Karachi but those selected for Stat or regional labs will complete their last six months in the respective laboratory which are located at Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Multan, Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Quetta. A stipend is paid during the entire training programme. Based on merit, selected candidates may be offered jobs at any of our laboratories after completion of this training.

Programme Goals

The medical technologist training (MTT) programme strives to develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to:
  • Educate technologists for jobs in AKU and the community
  • Provide quality technical education in laboratory sciences
  • Provide quality clinical education related to laboratory sciences
  • Provide a broad understanding of the role of technologists in health care delivery system
  • Graduate technologists that possess the most up-to-date knowledge, high level of clinical competency with a professional, caring attitude
  • ​Encourage the continuing pursuit of educational and professional growth provide service excellence training for personal and professional grooming

Programme Objectives

The MTT programme curriculum provides student with basic knowledge and appropriate experience in the laboratory sciences. Upon completion and initial appointment, the Medical Technologist (MT) will be able to perform the following task with proficiency, as adopted from The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS):
  • Collect, process, and analyze biological specimens and other substances
  • Perform analytical tests of body fluids, cells, and substances
  • Analyze factors that affect procedures and results, and take appropriate action(s) within predetermined limits when corrections are indicated
  • Monitor quality control within predetermined limits
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments or refer to appropriate source for repairs
  • Apply principles of safety
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with patients, laboratory personnel, and other health professionals
  • Recognize the responsibilities of other laboratory health care personnel and interact with them with respect to their jobs and patient care
  • Apply basic scientific principle in learning new techniques and procedures
  • ​Relate laboratory findings to common disease processes and recognize and act upon individual needs for continuing education as a function of growth and maintenance of professional competence
