Requirements of the Physical Therapy programme
At the end of each module, the Paediatric Physical Therapy programme student will complete an exam for that module with a minimum score a 70%, in order to continue to the next module. Four modules (Chest and Cardiovascular, Musculoskeletal, Neurological and Special Topics) each, will have their own didactic and practical exam, resulting in four written exams.
To pass this course of study, a minimum of 70% is required on all module exams as well as practical work in the ward.
| The following grading system will be followed: A = 80% or above B= 70% or above C = 60% or above
| Students need to clear all 4 module exams plus the practical training, which is 50% of the final grade in order to graduate. The practical training will be evaluated with a Grand viva and monthly viva. Practical training consists of a minimum of 8 hours per day for 5 days a week in the ward for at least 6 months and outpatient work, 4 hours a day for 3-6 months is the minimum requirement to clear the practical part of the program.

One case study per student is the minimum requirement for a presentation. The student is expected to self-educate on the resources and books, which will be provided for their perusal/self study. This is an adult learning program. Student will not always be led by hand for practical teaching. The aim is for the trainer and student to interact for mutual benefit. The aim in case-study presentation is to introduce the student to the clinical decision-making process in paediatric physical therapy, setting realistic goals and empowering the family through mutual goal setting and expectation/consultation.
The case study will be evaluated as following,
1. A thorough History
2. Examination
3. Evaluation
4. Realistic treatment goals /plan and discuss why they were chosen
In addition, thrice a week, the students will attend rounds in the paediatric ward with Dr Zehra Habib. The objective is to learn how to make decisions, given the acute cases in the ward. The trainees will be supervised by the senior therapist/master trainer on the cases in the ward, as well as the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) and NICU. At no point will the trainees be unsupervised.
In order to obtain the certificate (both from the Sindh board and AKUH), the student needs to successfully complete both the didactic part of the training (four module exams) and serve in the general paediatric ward of AKUH and outpatient clinic.
The duration of this course is one year; however if the practical part of the training is not complete, the student will have to compensate with extra time to complete it to fulfill the patient contact hours prior to receiving the certificate at graduation.
The student is required to complete a form documenting the type and number of patients they saw in the ward plus consulting clinics. This is done to see if the student has received adequate exposure to various types of cases. The student will also be required to complete an evaluation of the program at the completion of the course and at 6-month interval through informal description (a paragraph) and through formal survey.
