​​​A warm welcome to the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at the Aga Khan University. Spanning several buildings at the main campus and four AKU secondary care hospitals, our department comprises 49 full-time, 22 non-full-time, and 8 full-time off-campus faculty members, along with clinical and research staff, establishing a robust presence throughout Karachi and the broader Pakistan.

Our department stands as a paramount institution both nationally and internationally. Our core mission (2021-2025) focuses on the enhancement of child health outcom​es across local, provincial, national, and international spheres. Our objectives include:

Elevating standards in Education, Service, and Research, emphasizing both population and clinical outcomes research.

Cultivating leadership qualities in clinicians, researchers, and educators.

Delivering services that:
a. Address the multifaceted needs of a significant patient population with precision and excellence.

b. Encompass more than 10 subspecialties, with plans to introduce Early Childhood Development, Pediatric Physiotherapy, and Pediatric Palliative Care, to name a few.
c. Prioritize patient satisfaction by fostering an ethos of care, compassion, and dedication.

Augmenting research funding from a diverse spectrum and broadening areas of influence.

Bolstering faculty and training programs through strategic collaborations with both local and global institutions.

Each year, our department accommodates ​58 Paediatric Post-Graduate trainees  or Residents,100 third-year MBBS students for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health Community Paediatrics rotations, 100 fourth-year students for Hospital Paediatric Clerkships, approximately 42 PGME interns, 12 to 15 national and international undergraduate elective students, and a designated number of fellows across six programs. Notably, our training programs receive full recognition from the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan. The department also offers Allied Hea​lth program training in the following two specialties:

  • Paediatric Physical Therapy (1 year) (Certified by Sindh Board of Technical Education)

  • Pediatric Echocardiography (2 years)

Our commitment to academic and research excellence is further exemplified by the variety of research fellowships, PhD, Masters, and mentorship programs we offer, including the Deans Clinical Research Fellowship and the Graduate Masters and PhD programs. Our expansive reach into diverse Pakistani communities, notably in Karachi and Matiari, coupled with our state-of-the-art research labs—such as the Nutrition Research Lab and the IDRL—positions us at the forefront of pioneering research. Our experts are deeply engaged in areas such as patient outcomes, simulation, education, and MNCH research, employing advanced methodologies and technologies.

Situated in the Women and Child Health Centre of Excellence Building at our main campus, our endeavors consistently contribute to the betterment of children beyond our pink walls, in Pakistan and the global community.
