Training

Growing up in an academic and professional environment, my vision for a successful life has always been one of service to humanity through discovery and integrity.
I graduated from Dow Medical College in Karachi in 1995 and completed my surgical residency at Liaquat National Postgraduate Institute. Subsequently, I expanded my knowledge and skills through additional training and fellowships in Pakistan and the United Kingdom. I commenced my professional career as a clinician and educator in 2002, joining the Department of General Surgery at Ziauddin University Hospitals. Three years later, in 2005, I moved to Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), where I continued my work in the field.
In 2006, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow awarded me a travelling fellowship for advanced surgical training. During this time, I underwent training in upper gastrointestinal surgery (GI) at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary and spent some time with the medical education department of Nottingham University. The insights I gained while in the United Kingdom enabled me to introduce advanced upper GI laparoscopic surgery at Civil Hospital Karachi and establish the Medical Education Cell at DUHS.
Early in my career as a surgeon, I developed a keen interest in bioethics and medical education. In 2008, I completed a one-year diploma at the Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture in Karachi. This program allowed me to integrate ethics education into my teaching and practice of surgery, furthering my commitment to providing the highest standard of patient care.
While serving as Associate Professor of Surgery and founding head of the Medical Education Cell at DUHS in 2010, I convinced the Vice-Chancellor to initiate a Master's program in medical education, the first of its kind in the South Asian region. This innovative program brought a transformative change that significantly impacted the field of medical education in Pakistan.
In 2012, I assumed the position of Founding Head of the Medical Education Unit at Rabigh Faculty of Medicine, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. During my tenure, I played a pivotal role in revising the undergraduate medical curriculum to align with contemporary principles of medical education. I also designed and implemented innovative courses for students and faculty development workshops while conducting educational research to address the challenges inherent in these endeavours.
My expertise in medical education, ethics, and practical experience enabled me to be accepted as a Ph.D. scholar at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. My doctoral research focused on developing and evaluating an educational framework and innovative strategy for ethics education in undergraduate medical programs specifically tailored to the Asian context. This research significantly contributed to advancing ethics education in the region.
In 2018, I returned to Pakistan and took on the role of Professor of Surgery and Additional Director of the Institute of Health Professions Education at DUHS. In this capacity, I enhanced faculty development programs, master and certificate courses in health professions education, and reviewed and revised of curricula for various undergraduate and graduate programs. My efforts in these areas were directed towards ensuring that students receive a comprehensive education that prepares them to excel in their respective fields and make meaningful contributions.
In 2022, I was appointed as a Professor of Medical Education and Director of Graduate Studies at Aga Khan University (AKU), where I now serve as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies. My responsibilities include overseeing the Master's and PhD programs in diverse disciplines and supporting the improvement of other undergraduate and postgraduate programs. In addition, I am actively engaged in scholarly pursuits, including educational delivery and research, thereby furthering the University's mission of advancing knowledge and improving health outcomes.
Throughout my professional career, I have been honoured to serve in several important positions, including National Coordinator and Faculty for the China project of the Primary Trauma Care Foundation in the United Kingdom, Assistant Secretary of the SAARC Surgical Care Society, Pakistan Chapter, Vice President of the Asian Bioethics Association, Educational Advisor to the National Bioethics Committee in Pakistan, Educational Consultant for the International Committee of the Red Cross, Supervisor and Assessor for the FAIMER-KEELE MHPE program, Visiting Faculty at CBEC and Jinnah Sindh Medical University, CBEC-Kenya Medical Research Institute Faculty Development Projects, and Reviewer for both national and international journals. These experiences have provided me with opportunities to effect positive change while learning from diverse professionals.

Research interests

My research interests lie at the intersection of health professions education and bioethics. I am particularly focused on enhancing educational standards and outcomes for healthcare students and professionals, with a keen interest in clinical, public health and research ethics. Additionally, I am dedicated to exploring innovative educational interventions in different sociocultural contexts. My work often involves qualitative research methods to deeply understand these interventions' impact in diverse settings. Through my research and faculty development activities, I continue to develop and improve ethical, professional, and communicative competence in healthcare professionals.
