Message from the Programme Director

The Department of Surgery, Dar es Salaam campus, offers comprehensive specialist training in General Surgery leading to the award of a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree. The surgical training is conducted in a practice based teaching environment in which biomedical science, clinical courses and practical learning are integrated.

The programme is competency based, which means that the progress is linked to the acquisition of defined competencies at each level of training during the four year course.

The Department conducts regular case based learning, morbidity and mortality meetings and journal club sessions supervised by faculty from all surgery sections. Interdisciplinary departmental, regional and international faculty deliver concept lectures on basic science, biomedical and clinical courses.

A multidisciplinary team of in-house and regional Aga Khan University faculty drawn from the Medical College in East Africa and the Aga Khan University Hospital participate in joint tumour board meetings via video conferences. This forum provides a standard high quality, interdisciplinary, evidence based academic and clinical platform for patient care and resident training.
