​Prof Ronald Wamalwa Wasike

Prof Ronald Wamalwa Wasike embarked his career in the Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi, AKUHN in 2004, bringing with him a solid academic foundation. A graduate of the University of Nairobi Medical School, he earned his MB.CH. B in Medicine & Surgery in September 1990 and later achieved an M.Med in General Surgery in March 2000. Furthering his expertise, he completed a Fellowship in Breast Surgery at the University of Alberta in February 2008.

Prof Wasike's commitment to academic excellence extended beyond clinical practice, culminating in his ongoing pursuit of a PhD in Vitamin D Receptor Polymorphism, focusing on its implications for the development and progression of breast cancer in Kenyan women.​

Throughout his tenure at AKUHN, Prof Wasike ascended through academic ranks, achieving the position of Associate Professor. His multifaceted roles included Program Director and Interim Chair, Department of Surgery.

On the professional side, He was the pioneer Breast oncoplastic surgeon in east and central Africa. After training in a fellowship at the university of Alberta in 2007-2008 in Breast surgical oncology. He also won the first Avon foundation for women Global Clinical Breast cancer scholarship where he was attached at Emory University of Atlanta, Georgia for six months in 2012.

He has supervised 14 residents in Breast cancer research for their dissertations from the department of surgery, pathology, radiology and anesthesia at the Aga khan University. Some of the residents have gone on to specialize in breast surgical oncology and serving in different parts of the country, notably Dr. Mutebi, Dr. Bahati and Dr.Mbaabu among many.

He has written a book for the general public and students; Breast cancer what we all need to know and conquering poverty of the mind, an autobiography. He has published over fifty papers on breast cancer with various residents from different departments of the Aga khan University Hospital-Nairobi.

His academic journey, characterized by a dedication to both learning and teaching, played a crucial role in shaping his influential role at the intersection of surgery and medical education. After nearly two decades of dedicated service, Prof Wasike retired from AKUHN in 2022, leaving behind a legacy of aca​demic and clinical excellence.

He was conferred the rank of Emeritus Professor in the department of surgery at Aga Khan University2024. In January 2025 he was appointed by the ministry of Education as a member of council at Moi University.​​
