Roger Smith, Director

Roger is the founding Director of ELE_net and has been in post since September 2014. Prior to joining AKU, he had worked for nearly twenty years in the higher education sector in the UK where he was employed in various teaching and management positions at the universities of Nottingham, Bristol and Leicester. He also worked for Kaplan Inc. for four years establishing preparatory provision for undergraduate and postgraduate study at universities in the UK, including Glasgow, Sheffield and Southampton.

Roger’s main profession interests are teaching English for Academic Purposes and quality assurance in English language teaching. He has served as the Chair of the BALEAP Accreditation Committee and as a member of the British Council’s Accreditation UK Scheme. He has also been an inspector for the BALEAP Accreditation Scheme, an IELTS Examiner and Examiner Trainer, and an external examiner for numerous universities in the UK and one in Iraq. Roger has an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Sheffield (UK) and an MBA from the University of Nottingham (UK).

Mariam Farooq

Mariam Farooq, Teaching Associate (ELT)

Mariam joined ELE_net at its initial stage of formation in November 2014.  In her current role, she is involved in designing and teaching English courses that the network offers. 

Mariam gained her Master of Education degree from the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), obtained a Bachelor in Commerce from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and completed ICELT from the Cambridge University, UK. She teaches courses related to English for Academic and Professional Purposes, and her areas of interest include Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and formative assessment. Mariam also has a strong interest in collaboration and innovation in education.

Daniel Raynor, Specialist (e-Learning)

Daniel is the e-Learning Specialist for ELE_net, having joined the team in September 2015. He worked for the British Council variously as an online course developer, learning designer, e-moderator and website editor for over five years, and as an English language teacher in Barcelona and Hong Kong for almost ten.

Daniel’s professional interests include the design of digital teaching, learning and assessment materials for blended and distance delivery and use of massive open online courses (MOOCs) in developing students’ academic language skills. Daniel has a Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults and an MSc in Information Technology in Education from the University of Hong Kong.

Asma Zehra, Teaching Associate (ELT)

Asma joined ELE net in January 2017. She has been associated with Aga Khan University in different roles for the past six years. In her current role, she is involved in planning and teaching the general, academic and professional courses that ELE_net offers.

Asma gained second position in her Master of Applied Linguistics from the University of Karachi and obtained a diploma in Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from the Centre of English Language. She is interested in eLearning and completed a certificate course from Trinity College, London in ICT in the Language classroom. She has a great deal of experience teaching courses related to English for Specific Purposes, and has coordinated Business, General and Academic English courses.

Jean Antunes, Specialist (ELT)

Jean joined ELE_net in April 2017. He is based in Dar es Salaam and covers ELE_net provision in East Africa. Before joining ELE_net, he worked at the British Council, Tanzania for two years and has been working as a language teacher since 1997. He has taught in Brazil, the UK and Tanzania, and has also worked as an IELTS examiner.

Jean is a CELTA qualified teacher and is currently completing the DELTA (a master’s level qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages). He holds a BA in English and Literature from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and a Master of Education from Aga Khan University, Institute for Educational Development, East Africa. His professional interests include English for Academic Purposes and Language in Education.

Fouzia Qalander Shah, Senior Assistant

Fouzia joined ELE_net in June 2017. In her current role, she is involved in providing high level managerial support to the Director and is responsible for the smooth running of ELE_net operations.

Fouzia is currently doing her Masters in Economics from University of Karachi and has a strong interest in learning about new information and communication technologies. She has seven years' experience of working in diverse office environments.
