Alex Awiti
Vice Provost

Dr. Awiti is Vice Provost of the Aga Khan University, in addition to being the Establishing Director of the East Africa Institute and Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; where he is involved in curriculum design for one of the most innovative liberal arts based undergraduate programmes in Africa.

Prior to joining AKU, Awiti was a postdoctoral fellow at the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York. He was also an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs. For two years, Dr Awiti worked under the mentorship of Jeffery D. Sachs, world-renowned professor of sustainable development and health policy and management, as well as with the World Food Prize laureate Pedro A. Sanchez and Cheryl Palm.


Soraiya Shah
Interim Director / Programmes Manager 

With a BJourn from Rhodes University & USIU Soraiya worked as radio presenter for seven years, while also working full time in marketing and communications for the hospitality industry. Returning to Rhodes University to undertake a PGDip (Hons) at the Sol Plaatje Institute in 2013, she returned to Nairobi and opened her own consultancy firm; specialising in media strategy for corporates and political parties, as well strategic interventions for brand alignment and management.
 
Having worked with AKU earlier on in her career as a consultant for the Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC), she finds herself back in familiar territory working as the Programmes Manager, and now Interim Director, for the East Africa Institute.


Caleb Orwa

Data Analyst

Caleb is a data analyst at the East African Institute (EAI). He holds an MSc in Computer Based Information Systems from Strathmore University, Nairobi, and a BSc. Forestry and Natural Resources Management from Moi University, Eldoret.  He spends his time in data analytics, backend database management and front-end development of dynamic and interactive web interfaces.
