Preparing for your Internship

Congratulations! We are happy that you will be joining us as an International Intern. Here are some things you need to know about before travelling to your internship location:​

Visa Information

Every intern will need a visa in order to intern abroad. The type of visa you need depends on your nationality and the country in which you want to intern. Please note that the International Internship Programme Office will assist all the interns with the visa process, including detailed instructions. Duration for obtaining visa varies from country to country:

  • ​Kenya: 3-4 months

  • Tanzania: 1-2 months

  • Pakistan: 3-4 months

  • Kyrgyzstan: 1-2 months

  • Tajikistan: 1-2 months

Please get all the required documents ready for visa at the time of submitting application. Documents include:

  • Passports copy (valid at least for six months)

  • Updated CV

  • Passport size photograph

  • Copy of educational degrees/diplomas/certificates/transcripts 

  • Copy of student ID card and a letter from the university​

Pre-Medical Certificate

Upon your selection, you will need to pass a brief medical exam, including a physical exam and a series of tests. You will get the tests done in your home country and forward a scanned copy of the results to us. Examination constitutes the following tests:

  • ​Urine D/R

  • Random blood sugar

  • Hemoglobin

  • ESR

  • Chest X-ray

  • Physical examination (please get the attached forms signed by your physician)

The following Vaccinations: (please consult your doctor for any additional vaccines that you will require. Please note that any vaccination costs will not be covered by AKU)

  • Polio

  • Hepatitis A

  • Typhoid

  • Hepatitis B

  • Tetanus (recommended)

  • Yellow fever (for travel to East Africa only)

References

You will need to have the attached reference form filled out by referees you mentioned in your application form. Please download the form and send to your all your referees. Referees are required to send the completed form directly to aku.iip@aku.edu. 

Terms and Conditions

You will be asked to sign a contract before your arrival. Your contract with IIP will include the following:

  • Date of internship

  • Reporting relationship

  • Vacation policy

  • Residential policy

  • Dress code

  • Confidentially policy

  • Copyright policy

  • Security policy

  • Discharging host agency and its affiliates from any liability issues

Orientation

You will be given an orientation during your first two days of internship. Orientation typically includes the following:

  • Meeting with supervisor

  • Departmental and campus tour

  • Opening of a bank account, if required

  • Security briefing

  • Meeting with i​nternship coordinator

  • Presentation on AKU and AKDN ​
