President’s Message

President Sulaiman Shahabuddin

A new era in the history of the Aga Khan University is dawning. For 42 years, we had the immense good fortune to be led by our Founder, His Highness the Aga Khan IV. United and inspired by his vision, we positively impacted millions of lives. Today, we are looking forward to building on his extraordinary legacy under the leadership of our new Chancellor, His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V, and our new Pro-Chancellor, Princess Zahra Aga Khan.

Our efforts over the next several years will be guided by AKU’s strategic plan for 2024-2028, AKU Onwards. We are launching new academic programmes, earning new forms of accreditation and implementing new technologies. We are advancing our environmental sustainability initiatives and partnering with government and private-sector institutions to improve health and education for the public, through research, capacity building and knowledge sharing.

FAS Students

Our growth in East Africa is accelerating, as we near completion of our academic and student housing facilities in Kampala, and anticipate the arrival of new cohorts of undergraduate nursing and medical students. In Karachi, the first cohort of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences is nearing the halfway point in its four years with us. It is exciting to see our new undergraduate programmes gathering momentum and beginning to change the face of AKU while enriching the educational landscape in their regions.

Every day, AKU is bringing knowledge and innovation to bear on the problems facing the societies it serves. The range and impact of our efforts are on full display in this edition of The President’s Review. It is a pleasure to share it with you.

Recently, I experienced one of the proudest days of my career, when I had the high honour of receiving Pakistan’s Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence). I mention this award for one reason only: because I believe it recognizes the achievements not of one person but of the entire AKU community. It reflects the University’s reputation for excellence – and that reputation has been painstakingly built by countless individuals.

At Convocation, Princess Zahra spoke of her commitment to working with the Chancellor “to sustain and strengthen this remarkable institution, remaining true to our father’s vision for the University.” To sustain, to strengthen and to remain true – I cannot think of a better description of our task. We should make these our watchwords in the new era that has begun.
