The Gift

Little Maryam Ali was on the verge of heart failure when she arrived at Aga Khan University Hospital. She had been previously misdiagnosed with nephrotic syndrome and renal diseases. If she had not reached the able care of Dr Iqtidar Khan and the paediatric cardiology team, this child’s life would have been lost. Dr Muneer Amanullah led a complex surgery to repair a valve in Maryam’s heart. For children with heart failure, this is one of the few options for survival, and Maryam was one of the youngest patients to undergo this procedure in the country.

Within three weeks of being admitted at AKUH, Maryam was given time for pre-surgery prepping - and operated on successfully. Due to her parents’ limited means, the Patient Welfare Programme at AKUH covered the cost of her treatment. The Patient Welfare Programme is successful due to the generosity of our donors.
