Helping Hands

Had he not been transferred to the AKUH for treatment, at the most crucial stage of his illness, he would probably not be alive.

His name is Miraalkhan Shamsullah and he is from Nawabshah.  By the time he reached teenage, thalassemia had already taken away two beloved family members.

In Pakistan, there are many sufferers like Miraalkhan, who fight this excruciating genetic illness daily. The treatment is expensive, prolonged and requires persistence. Blood transfusions become a regular routine for survival. The doctors at the hospital at which he was being treated, could not  understand his changing symptoms. Little did they know that he was suffering from excess iron build up in his body. His physicians recommended immediate transfer to AKUH for a thorough diagnosis. They emphasized that it was his only chance for recovery.

Upon reaching AKUH, Miraalkhan was examined by Dr Babar Hasan and a team of experts. He was on the verge of heart failure and in need of chelation treatment to flush out the excess iron. He was rushed to the intensive care unit at AKUH where Dr Babar performed the treatment on him with great success. Post operation, he was placed under the care of the AKUH staff who charted his improving progress carefully. They tended to him with great dedication and he slowly regained both his health and appetite. Once his heartbeat became normal, he was discharged from the hospital.

Miraalkhan's family could not afford the cost of his treatment. However, the Patient Welfare Programme provided them with support during their time of need.

There are many more patients like Miraalkhan who need your help.
