PET/CT Scanner and Cyclotron

Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography Scanner and Cyclotron

PET/CT scanners have revolutionised diagnosis and treatment as they combine two different forms of medical imaging at the same time. Combined PET/CT scans provide images that pinpoint the location of abnormal metabolic activity, rather than just images of the organs.

A cyclotron is a type of compact particle accelerator used to produce quantities of radioactive isotopes, a substance required for PET imaging. This will be the first time the technology is used in Karachi.

Combined PET/CT scans allow doctors to detect and accurately diagnose various types of cancers, cardiac disorders, neurological diseases, and evaluate the effectiveness of cancer treatment plans. The scans can also help determine if a cancer has returned after treatment.

Donor support has enabled the University Hospital to:

  • Add to the comprehensive diagnostic services already available at AKUH

  • Develop a non-invasive procedure for the early detection and more accurate diagnosis of disease and treatment

Project Cost:

Total Cost of PET/CT Scanner: US$ 2.5 million (PKR 250 million)
Total Cost of Cyclotron: US$ 1 million  (PKR 100 million)
