Matiari Research and Training Centre

Matiari district is located 250 km north of Karachi and has an official population of 0.6 million. Health facilities for pregnant women and newborns remain scarce, resulting in high mortality rate.

For over 10 years, through its existing facilities, the Aga Khan University Division of Women and Child Health has worked with public sector players and private local providers in Matiari to improve health policies, infrastructure, service delivery as well as enhance livelihoods.

To expand the scope of work and further strengthen local capacities in the field of maternal and child health, AKU is constructing a new research and training centre in Matiari.

This facility will enable the University Hospital to:

  • Conduct high impact research projects for the improvement of women and child health

  • Provide capacity development to the health care practitioners of the area along with improved work space

Project Cost:

Total Cost: US$ 634,000 (PKR 63.4 million)
