Another milestone achieved at the Aga Khan University campus in Tanzania – the School of Nursing and Midwifery, East Africa (SONAM, EA) welcomed the first cohort of undergraduate nursing students.
The student from diverse backgrounds across Tanzania were excited and eager to start their higher education journey.
“At Aga Khan University, education is properly valued and you are warmly welcome to learn and enjoy positively," said Dr Eunice Siaity-Pallangyo, Associate Dean, SONAM EA. “Here, learning is a student-centered journey, where you take the wheel and steer your own educational path. Your time here is not just about acquiring knowledge, it's about owning your learning experience".
Direct-entry undergraduate programmes are a novel addition to AKU's academic offerings in East Africa, designed to provide a streamlined path for students who want to pursue their higher education aspirations. Similar undergraduate programmes in medicine and nursing were launched in Kenya in September. The arrival of the nursing students in Tanzania marks a turning point for the university emphasizing its commitment to inclusivity and access to higher education.
“There are a lot of higher learning institutions in our country but in terms of service, there are alot of challenges that students are facing that they cannot achieve their dreams as per their expectation," said Simon Selegio, an undergraduate nursing student. “After my orientation here at Aga Khan University I was surprised and amazed. I wish I would have known this place sooner, since it is quite perfect place for students to learn and have positive reflection to people in society after completing their studies. I am so happy and comfortable to be here and I look forward to this academic year and I promise to all my faculty members that I will do my best in all of my studies."
The direct-entry BSc Nursing programme will augment the University's existing programmes by increasing the quantity and competence of nurses in the region.
