The Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) at the Aga Khan University (AKU) has appointed Prof George Nyabuga as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation programme. In his role, Prof Nyabuga will serve as the faculty lead and coordinate all aspects of the programme.
Prof Nyabuga joins GSMC from the University of Nairobi where he has been an Associate Professor of media and journalism. Speaking on his appointment, Prof Nyabuga noted his eagerness to work with an experienced faculty to deliver world-class programmes at a time when university education requires change and innovative methods of delivery. “I am delighted to be joining an institution focusing on global excellence and local relevance, the dictum that defines me as a person and academic," he said.
Prof Nyabuga has almost 20 years' experience teaching in higher education. He taught journalism, and media and cultural studies at the University of Worcester, and international media and communication, and comparative politics at Coventry University both in the United Kingdom. Prof. Nyabuga worked as a journalist before joining academia, his last position in the media being the Managing Editor in charge of Weekend Editions, and Managing Editor, Media Convergence, at the Standard Group. His research interests include the sociology of journalism, new and digital media, communication, journalism and media theories, comparative media systems, and media, journalism, politics and democracy. He has a PhD in Media, Politics and History from Coventry University.
"George epitomizes the journalist-scholar confluence that makes GSMC such a valuable resource for the media industry," said GSMC Dean Lawrence Pintak.
Prof Nyabuga is set to assume his new role on January 1, 2022.
