As part of the university-wide initiative of implementing the use of Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in teaching and learning at AKU, a workshop was successfully conducted at the Institute for Educational Development in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The workshop was facilitated by the Network of Blended and Digital Learning in collaboration with the IT- Academic Computing and attended by fourteen faculty members and three staff members from April 19th to April 27th.
The VLE implementation initiative aims to enable AKU faculty members and students to use AKU-VLE in the teaching and learning process.
During the workshop, the participants learned to engage students beyond the physical classrooms through the VLE. They gained hands-on experience in designing interactive learning experiences using online tools and activities, uploading digital content and developing online assessment tasks. In addition to the hands-on work, facilitators also provided one-to-one pedagogical consultations on the design of course-specific digital-content and the role of teachers in online learning environments. Overall, the participants rated the workshop between "excellent" (58%) and "good" (48%). Some of the participants commented:
"The workshop came at the right time when I needed the training most. I had the advantage of getting support whenever I needed, and there was a very friendly environment in the facilitation of the workshop. The facilitators had the hands-on skills, and they have the full knowledge of the MOODLE and "VLE" environment. I sincerely thank all the facilitators. What I need to do now is to do more practice and have the passion to continue with same pace in the implementation of the delivery of the courses for the semester."
"I believe this workshop catered for the different levels of users in our context. I have been using the VLE for the past year, but still, there were some tools I needed more time and guidance to explore, and this workshop provided me with that. It has been really useful and motivating. Thank you for everything!"
"It was wonderful. In-spite of having participants at different skill levels, individual need were considered and adequate support provided. No one was left behind."
