The Aga Khan University (AKU) Medical College, East Africa’s surgery residency programme has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International (ACGME-I).
ACGME-I accreditation is a globally recognized standard of excellence in postgraduate medical education, confirming that a programme meets international requirements in curriculum design, faculty oversight, resident assessment and patient safety.
This accreditation expands AKU’s portfolio of internationally recognised residency programmes. In 2025, the Medical College’s programmes in Internal Medicine and Radiology received initial accreditation, while Paediatrics and Child Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology earned continued accreditation status.
“AKU remains committed to delivering world class medical education,” said Professor Lukoye Atwoli, Dean, Medical College, East Africa. “With this accreditation, all our Master of Medicine Residency programmes at the Medical College, East Africa are now accredited with the ACGME-I, a testament to the quality of our programmes and the pedigree of our faculty, staff, and students.”
AKU Medical College, East Africa remains the only institution in the region recognised by ACGME-I for having the infrastructure, policies, procedures and support systems required to deliver high quality graduate medical education.

Accreditation is awarded following a comprehensive peer review process that assesses both the sponsoring institution and individual residency programmes against established international standards. The process enhances programme quality and strengthens public confidence in accredited graduate medical education institutions.
