For Joan Wetumi, pursuing a Master of Arts in Digital Journalism (MADJ) at the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) was about more than just a degree. She sought a program that would combine practical skills with a rigorous academic curriculum. "I was drawn to GSMC's strong emphasis on modern journalism and communication, and its balance of professional and academic expertise," she explains.
The most valuable part of her experience was the opportunity to work with a diverse group of peers. These collaborations, coupled with hands-on learning, enriched her education. "Working alongside people from various walks of life broadened my perspective and made learning incredibly engaging," she says.
Balancing coursework with professional and personal obligations was a significant hurdle. "Time management was a major challenge; I had very little time for myself," she recalls. However, with careful planning and self-discipline, she successfully managed her responsibilities and excelled in the program.
GSMC had a profound and lasting impact on her career. It strengthened her analytical thinking, storytelling skills, and digital communication expertise, boosting her professional confidence. Today, as a Journalism and Communications Consultant, she leverages these skills for strategic media planning and social impact communication.
Joan envisions herself leading international communication projects in the next five years, a dream she believes is now within reach thanks to her master's program. "The professional courses and the networks I built at GSMC have fully prepared me for this career path," she notes.
She advises prospective students to "come ready to learn, share, and challenge yourself—it’s a truly transformative experience." Summing up her journey, Joan states, "GSMC was the bridge between my ambition and my ability to act on it, transforming my goals into tangible skills and opportunities."
