A timely new book co-authored by Dr Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Founding Director of the Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD) at Aga Khan University, and Dr Jai K. Das, Associate Director of IGHD, addresses one of Pakistan's most critical and complex challenges—water insecurity in the face of accelerating climate change.
Titled “Climate Change and Water Related Challenges in Pakistan: Tangible Solutions" and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, the book presents a rigorous, evidence-informed analysis of how climate stressors are affecting freshwater availability, public health systems, and livelihoods across Pakistan.
Grounded in data and decades of policy engagement, the book explores the intersection of climate change, agriculture, nutrition, and equity. It provides practical, scalable strategies tailored to Pakistan's diverse ecological zones and governance contexts.
“This book is a call to action for policymakers and institutions to prioritize coordinated, cross-sectoral responses to the water crisis," said Dr Bhutta. “We hope it provides a useful foundation for both research and implementation."
Dr Jai K. Das added: “Rather than merely highlighting risks, we wanted to present tangible, proven solutions that can be adapted to local contexts—particularly those affecting vulnerable populations."
The book reflects the ongoing commitment of IGHD leadership to advance interdisciplinary research and translate knowledge into policy and practice in the areas of climate, health, and development. It also aligns with Aga Khan University's broader goals of contributing to sustainability, resilience, and public health equity.
