Most high school students struggle with picking the correct profession option. A large percentage have a general concept of the degree programme they want to pursue, but they have no idea about their career options following graduation. To help them make a decision, AKU in Tanzania hosted a career day for over 60 students at the Dar es Salaam campus.
The event, jointly organized by the Institute for Educational Development, East Africa (IED EA), the Medical College, East Africa and School of Nursing and Midwifery, East Africa (SONAM EA) aimed to provide students with valuable insights into their career paths and assist them in making informed decisions about their future educational opportunities.
Dr Eunice Siaity-Pallangyo, Associate Vice Provost at AKU Tanzania, emphasized the university’s commitment to provide quality education that meets international standards while maintaining local relevance and impact. She stressed AKU's mission to nurture graduates who are not only lifelong learners, but also agents of positive change in their respective fields.
During the session, students discussed the factors that influence their job choices, as well as the necessity of making informed selections. They were able to hear firsthand perspectives from current students and alumni pursuing careers in nursing, education, and medicine. These testimonials gave insights into the student experience and the transforming effect of AKU's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
"When we were discussing about coming to AKU, we were not even aware of these potentials that are here,” said Elly Sarakikya, Headmistress at Sega Girls Secondary School. “We are thrilled to have seen that you have invited all these people to come and encourage our students to endure and study hard. I am so sure that you have uplifted our students thinking and when they’ll go back I know they’ll be new people.”
Dr Stewart Mbelwa from SONAM EA led a session on mental health awareness, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing mental well-being alongside academic pursuits. Students were encouraged to strike a balance between their studies and personal time, recognizing the importance of rest and recreation in maintaining overall well-being.
AKU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting students not only academically but also in navigating the challenges of adolescence in the 21st century. The university aims to empower students to prosper intellectually and personally as they prepare for their future aspirations through mentoring, coaching, and practical skill development.
