Prof. Nancy Booker, Dean of the Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media and Communications (GSMC) was appointed as the Vice President of the African Journalism Educators' Network (AJEN). The network was formally founded at a round table meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, on August 28, 2023. The meeting was attended by over 50 journalism educators from various Sub-Saharan Africa countries, and adopted the network's constitution.
Other members of the executive board which will serve for a period of two years include:
President - Dr. Franz Krüger, NLA Høgskolen, in Norway and Wits University
Secretary general - Dr Sisanda Nkoala, Cape Peninsula University Technical University
Treasurer - Christina Chan Meetoo, University of Mauritius
Prof Margaret Jjuuko, University of Rwanda
Dr Basel Hamusokwe, University of Zambia
Dr Modestus Fosu, University of Media, Arts and Communication, in Ghana
Prof. Booker has had an illustrious career as an academic, teacher, researcher and media practitioner with over 18 years teaching and academic administration experience. She specializes in broadcast journalism, multimedia storytelling, media management and health communication. She has also been trained in leadership at Harvard. Prof. Booker has several peer-reviewed publications in these areas and appears and comments regularly on Kenya media. She is actively engaged with several media organizations to strengthen and professionalize media in East Africa and is a member of several professional and academic organizations.
Prof. Booker currently serves as a board member in the East African Communication Association, and is also a commissioner with the Media Council of Kenya (MCK)Complaints Commission.
AJEN was formed from the realisation that journalism schools have an important role to play in improving the quality of journalism and strengthening the information rights of citizens. The network will bring journalism educators and institutions from Sub-Saharan and North Africa together to engage and learn from each other.
