Students from AKU’s School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKU-SONAM) helped spread awareness about simple preventive measures against tropical and communicable diseases through a Health Awareness Camp as part of a bi-annual initiative.
As many as 400 people participated in the camp to learn about ten common communicable diseases including vaccine preventable diseases such as chicken pox, measles, typhoid, influenza and diarrhoea; mosquitoes-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya; and other communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, hepatitis and worm’s infestation. The camp was organised in collaboration with the Aga Khan University Hospital’s Pharmacy department.
Mr Zain-ul-abideen, a visitor at the camp, said: “I am glad to have visited these health awareness stalls with my family. We usually overlook the importance of vaccination but it is probably the simplest preventive measure that we can take to protect ourselves from these infections.”
SONAM Dean Dr David Arthur appreciated the efforts put in by the School’s Year 3 BScN students and their facilitators and called for such camps to be held more frequently in order to improve health awareness and to help students gain valuable clinical experience.
