Professor Brenda Leibowitz (1957-2018)
It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of Professor Brenda Leibowitz on 26th April 2018, a celebrated educationalist and an esteemed collaborator of Teaching and Learning efforts at AKU. As a life-long proponent of equal opportunity in education, Dr. Leibowitz had been offering her services to TL_net since 2016 when she facilitated a workshop on engaging with SOTL at GSMC Nairobi. More recently, she served as the key note speaker at the SOTL Conference at AKU Karachi in 2017 and conducted a pre-conference workshop with Dr. Kausar S. Khan. She championed AKU faculty's scholarship by inviting them to contribute to a special issue of the international peer reviewed journal SOTL in the South of which she was the editor-in-chief.
Dr. Leibowitz was the South African Research Chair Initiative (SARChI)'s Chair for Teaching and Learning in Post-secondary Education and Training. At the University of Johannesburg, she was a Professor in the Faculty of Education as well as the Chair of Teaching and Learning. She was also the convener for several prestigious programmes including the Teaching Advancement at University (TAU) Fellowships Programme and the South African Universities Learning and Teaching (SAULT) Forum. She was also on the editorial board of the International Journal for Academic Development (IJAD) of which she had previously been a co-editor. She held a PhD in Education from the University of Sheffield. Her research interests included the scholarship of teaching and learning, social justice, practice based approaches to learning and professional learning.
