Neurophysiology Services utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to perform tests that aid in diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, neuromuscular junction and muscles. Our technologists work with consultant neurologists and are qualified to analyze data to make certain that the information being obtained is valid and interpretable.

The department is responsible for electro-diagnostic services to patients with neurological complaints and diseases affecting the nervous system. The procedures aid in diagnosis and monitoring neurological disease processes and treatment efficacy. In addition, the department also educates technologists and young physicians.

Responsibilities

The focus of the training program is to develop technologists with knowledge, skills and attitude in Neurophysiology (NP) diagnostic procedures and patient care.  This program is a 24-month comprehensive training encompassing all aspects of Neurophysiology procedures. This is a full time on the job training program with rotational evening and night duties which requires a 2 year complete commitment. The trainees will not be able to attend to any other job/training while in this program. Our comprehensive selection process ensures that students accepted into AKUH-NP are a great fit from day one.

The curriculum includes training in nerve conduction studies, electroencephalography, evoked potentials, sleep studies , assistance with injection botulinum toxin for neurological disorders and intraoperative monitoring. 

This program is for individuals who enjoy interacting directly with patients in a hospital environment, thrive on using analytical thinking skills, and willing to work hard. This program will benefit selected trainees by providing:

  • Regionally recognized certification upon successful completion.
  • Eligibility to take the American Board of Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists (ABRET) 
  • Certificate of attendance from AKU – Karachi, Department of Neurophysiology;
  • Employment opportunities in the Middle East, United Kingdom, etc.
  • Full time paid on-the-job training.

Requirements

You should have:

  • Minimum of Bachelor of Science degree (BS): a). Medical Technology (Neurosciences) b). Neurophysiology (candidates having recently graduated shall be given preference).
  • Full time commitment with acceptance for additional rotational evening/ night duty from the time of induction.
  • No other jobs/trainings will be allowed in person. This program requires 24/7 dedication.
  • Previous health care experience will be beneficial.
  • Good command of English language, both written and verbal.
  • Computer skills will be an asset.
  • Willingness to learn new interventions.

Certificates will be issued upon the successful completion of the 2-year training only.
