Introduction

The Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) in Kenya and East Africa is a vibrant academic community dedicated to the provision of transformational learning, teaching and research that makes a leading contribution to improving the health and well-being of communities. Teaching faculty are all engaged in active clinical practice, research, and professional leadership with a specialty focus on delivery of upgrade programs for working nurses and midwives, and with plans to commence a direct entry Bachelor of Science in Nursing program soon.   
The School is recruiting a suitably qualified and experienced clinical instructor who will be based at SONAM’s campus in Nairobi, Kenya. The role offers excellent career development opportunities for individuals passionate about building clinical leadership and service delivery capacity within Kenya’s nursing and midwifery practice. The incumbent will be research active and will work well within a team possessing excellent teaching, learning and communication skills.   
Applicants must have credentials commensurate with appointment at the level of Assistant Lecturer with a strong academic, clinical nursing practice and research background, with demonstrated experience in teaching, learning and communicating. Registration and current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) is required.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching of undergraduate courses within SONAM’s accredited nursing, midwifery and continuing professional development programmes
  • Utilize innovative pedagogies and digital technology to facilitate learning centered approach
  • Actively contribute to the body of nursing and midwifery knowledge through engaging in research, grant writing and publication 
  • Actively engage in clinical practice within nursing & midwifery 
  • Ensure that skills lab requirements for all courses are met and facilitate clinical placements for students
  • Assist faculty in creating high quality clinical experiences for students as the liaison between faculty, clinical sites and the Centre for Innovation in Medical Education (CIME) lab
  • Maintain own continuous professional development to enhance scholarship of teaching and learning, clinical expertise, research and leadership   
  • Contribute to the administration of academic programmes offered at SONAM as well as other administration duties as may be called upon
  • Work collaboratively with other AKU entities, partners and stakeholders 

Requirements

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing/Midwifery with a Masters degree from an accredited and recognized university
  • Must be registered for a PhD programme or equivalent doctoral programme
  • Must be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Must have a valid practice license  
  • Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Should have at least 2 years clinical practice and university teaching experience
  • Should possess excellent communication/interpersonal, organizational and counselling skills
