Introduction

The Aga Khan University is a private, international university committed to international standards of excellence in teaching, research, and service. The AKU global network of libraries (10 libraries) supports students and faculty in their study, teaching and research needs. Our collections include books, current journals, back files of journals, educational reports, audio/visual aids, and digital media. We also provide access to online journals, books, and other resources. The University Archives is domiciled in the Office of the University Librarian.

Responsibilities

You will manage, process, store and disseminate information in the University Archives. You will also acquire textual material, pictures, maps, architectural documents, electronic materials, films and videos, and sound recordings and multimedia materials. 

You will be responsible for:
  • developing and maintaining an effective records management system
  • providing reference assistance for archival and special collections materials, as needed
  • working with the Associate Vice Provost & University Librarian to develop external funding sources, including donations and grants
  • appraising archival collections kept as permanent records to determine the function, authenticity, and evidentiary value 
  • processing collections according to accepted archival standards and procedures
  • prioritizing, overseeing, and participating in accessioning, arrangement, description, and preservation of archival collections in physical and digital formats
  • developing a long-term vision for the unit that fits the strategic direction of the university and library
  • developing and disseminating appropriate policies and procedures, including a collection development policy.

Requirements

You should have:
  • a Master’s degree in Archives and Records Management, Library Studies, Information Science or equivalent. 
  • at least seven (7) to ten (10) years’ experience of working in a University Archives or related environment
  • desired: a second graduate degree in humanities, liberal arts, or another relevant discipline.
  • professional membership affiliation to the International Council of Archivists (ICA) or relevant national association
  • knowledge of current trends and best practices in the archival, special collections, and records management fields, including familiarity with technologies and best practices in organisation, digitisation, preservation, and provision of access
  • demonstrated desire and record of developing professional skills and knowledge
  • familiarity and experience with digital tools, such as Archive Space, CONTENTdm, institutional repositories (IR) - Digital Commons, Photoshop, Portfolio, and a high level of familiarity with Microsoft Office products 
  • effective oral and written communication skills
  • ability to work independently and with internal and external constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, researchers, and local community members
  • understanding of the value of diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, particularly regarding the appraisal and description of information resources
  • a record of accomplishment in scholarship and professional service activities.
