Introduction

The Aga Khan University (AKU) is a leading institution for medical, nursing and teacher education and training, for research and public health services in the developing world. AKU’s faculty, students and graduates go where the need is greatest, working in informal urban settlements, remote villages, and regions where conflict or neglect has decimated basic services. Guided by the principles of impact, quality, relevance and access, the University has campuses and programmes in Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Afghanistan and the United Kingdom. It operates teaching hospitals in Karachi and Nairobi.

The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is the premier public health academic department of AKU-Pakistan, recognized regionally and internationally for its quality and reach of its work. CHS Department has a triple mandate, of excellence in public health research, education for developing leadership to address community health needs and collaborative public health practice with academic institutions, communities, government and non-government organization. The Department has extensive research programmes and is organized into three research groups with their respective heads: Health Systems and Policy; Environmental and Occupational Health & Non-Communicable Diseases; and Reproductive Health Research Group. It houses the graduate programmes in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Public Health and Health Policy Management. 

The mandate of CHS is aligned with the vision of the Chancellor who set the direction for the University to take a lead in community development and the creation of an innovative curriculum that emphasizes a balance of tertiary care with population health.

CHS is initiating its search for a worthy candidate to lead the Department to further excellence.

Responsibilities

You will provide dynamic leadership to the Department for managing and developing education, research and development activities at undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and continuing education levels at the University. You will also direct the teaching and research activities of the Department and its overall growth in Public Health.

Requirements

You should have:

  • a professional terminal degree in public health (Dr PH, PhD, DSc or equivalent) or a physician with certification in a specialty directly related to public health (e.g. Community Medicine, Public Health & Preventive Medicine)
  • an academic background with experience of independent research including securing of grant funding and publications, demonstrating an independent established portfolio of work
  • experience of an academic administrative post which may include administration of a department/section, of graduate and PhD programmes, in addition to considerable direct teaching hours of graduate teaching
  • experience of receiving and growing an established portfolio of research as well as facilitate the growth of other scientists
  • capability in network building persuasive speaking, positive profiling and collaborative governance with internal entities as well as externally with donor agencies, policy stakeholders and civil society organizations. to deliver impactful contributions to public policy
  • demonstrated experience of personnel management across a substantial faculty/staff base and academic mentorship for faculty and trainees
  • in-depth experience of health systems and public health programmes and contribution to public health policy with different stakeholders would be beneficial.
