The Department is a newly formed vibrant identity for ophthalmology at AKU poised to deliver subspecialized and multidisciplinary services integrated with an enabling environment that supports outstanding teaching/learning, research, partnerships, and leadership development.   

Current Faculty work closely with a team of over 40 specialized medical staff, nurses, optometrists, technicians, technologists and others to offer comprehensive eye care for adults and children. These include but are not limited to surgery for cataract, corneal transplant, retinal disorders, glaucoma, orbital and facial reconstruction, refractive, squint, and ophthalmic tumors. Most of these services are delivered through the outpatient consulting clinics and/or day care surgery.

The successful applicant will be appointed in OVS, with a cross appointment possible in another Department.  We offer a highly collaborative environment for translational vision research that builds on inter-departmental strengths in molecular genetics of inherited retinal diseases, ocular oncology, retinopathy of prematurity, and early detection of childhood vision problems.

We are seeking an outstanding clinician who has a track record of excellence in vision research. The applicant is expected to have a competitive publication record of original peer-reviewed research, and to develop or have an established extramurally funded research program in vision research. Applicants must also provide evidence of their commitment to multi-disciplinary collaborative research and excellence in teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Subspecialty fellowship training in one of the following areas is preferred: pediatrics-ophthalmology, cornea, low vision rehabilitation, neuro-ophthalmology, genetics, ocular-oncology, and oculoplastics/orbit. 

Aga Khan University invites applications for the position of Associate Professor / Assistant Professor as a Clinician Researcher within the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
The successful applicant will be supported with startup funds and additional resources as deemed appropriate.


You will be responsible to:
  • take up independent consultant status
  • devote a substantial portion of time and effort to clinical and/or basic translational research
  • apply for intra and extramural grants
  • mentor and train other faculty as well as learners to enhance their research capacity 
  • serve as a member/leader of department/hospital/university committees related to research
  • teach undergraduate, postgraduate, graduate other health professional students.


You should have:
  • completed postgraduate training with FCPS, FRCOphth, American Board or equivalent and subsequent clinical, teaching and research experience.  Clinical subspecialty fellowship training will be an asset
  • at least three years of experience (for Assistant Professor) and eight years of experience (for Associate Professor) in teaching/research in a HEC recognized University with five years’ post-terminal experience of teaching
  • registered or be eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP)  
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • professional conduct that fosters a high-performance team culture.
