Introduction

The Office of Dean of Students (ODOS) was created in 2017 to support students’ professional and personal development at AKU. The Office works closely with faculty, staff, and leadership across all entities and units to foster student engagement and to prepare them to enter society as innovative, collaborative, and compassionate leaders in their fields. In line with internationally recognized best practices adapted for the local context, ODOS is instrumental in helping AKU as a whole move towards greater student-centeredness. 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Student Development and Counselling (SD&C), the incumbent will be responsible to provide effective counselling services to undergraduate and post-graduate students and assist in developing programmes and resources for students’ resilience and positive mental wellbeing. Other job responsibilities include:

  • enhancing psychological wellbeing of students through counseling sessions, setting and achieving therapeutic goals and maintaining session records of students’ progress
  • increasing self-awareness and coping skills in students through workshops, counseling sessions, and psychological assessments
  • identifying environmental stressors having an impact on students’ wellbeing and making recommendations to authorities
  • developing programs for students’ wellbeing by liaising with SD&C members and other relevant personnel
  • researching, analysing and developing material for student, as and when required
  • effectively collaborating with other departments for student wellbeing by receiving and making referrals.

Requirements

You must have:

  • a Master's degree in Psychology. MPhil in Clinical/Educational Psychology is preferred
  • at least 2 years of training in counselling/psychotherapy and psychological assessments
  • minimum 2 years of counselling/psychotherapy in educational or clinical settings with adolescent and adult populations and some experience of psychoeducational work
  • knowledge of counselling theories and techniques 
  • research experience preferably with at least one publication
  • ability to conduct psychological assessments and write reports
  • excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • strong public speaking and presentation skills
  • proficiency in MS Word and MS PowerPoint.
