The Resource Development Department at Aga Khan University is responsible for advancing the mission and priorities of the University and its Hospitals by developing mutually beneficial relationships with its friends and supporters, and by generating philanthropic and other financial support. Through best practices in university advancement and fundraising, Resource Development works closely with university leadership, faculty, physicians and alumni, to engage diverse international constituencies. With the generous support of donors and partners from around the world,  AKU advances teaching, research and healthcare, and has a profound impact on the lives of its students, patients, and the wider community.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, you will advance a portfolio of current and prospective principal gift donors and secure large philanthropic gifts in support of the University’s strategic priorities.  You will also play a key role with the University’s Court of Benefactors and International Council.

Specific responsibilities include;
  • pro-actively managing and advancing a portfolio of current and prospective Principal Gift donors and securing philanthropic Principal Gifts in support of the strategic priorities of the University
  • actively participating in the identification and cultivation of new prospective donors
  • planning, engaging, executing and/or participating in donor engagement events and strategic meetings, nationally and internationally, both in-person and/or virtually
  • travelling regularly to meet donors and, as necessary, visiting university campuses and operations
  • partnering in delivering a strategic annual programme for members of the Court of Benefactors and the International Council, aimed at deepening their engagement with the University
  • partnering fully with Principal Gift fundraisers and colleagues in Resource Development for the purpose of advancing strategic relationships
  • ensuring that all University and department policies and procedures related to fundraising and advancement services, including those related to donor records, contact reports, donor reporting, are observed and implemented to the highest standards, aspiring to best practice. 

Requirements

You should have:
  • an advanced degree in an area of relevance from a recognised reputable university. A Master’s degree will be preferred
  • minimum 8-10 years of relevant experience preferably in the not-for-profit or higher education sector. Candidate should have knowledge of international philanthropic sectors. a solid track record in fundraising, including securing 6-7 figure gifts, is highly desirable  
  • experience of working directly with and advising senior leaders, academic faculty and/or influential volunteers
  • excellent verbal and written English language communication and presentation skills
  • a proven track record of working with a wide variety of individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds to deliver measurable results  
  • the ability to maintain highest level of professional standards related to cultural sensitivity, ethical behavior and personal discretion  
  • the ability to develop strong, mutually respectful, collaborative working relationships, internally and externally, to meet institutional objectives 
  • strong negotiating and navigating skills with a track record of managing complex situations and individuals strong ability with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Powerpoint   
  • high level of self-confidence and enthusiasm, self-motivation, and energy to undertake diverse responsibilities, as well as be comfortable working within the framework of an integrated fundraising programme in a team-oriented environment 
  • a commitment to continuous professional self-development and self-improvement, with an aspiration to be a model of professional best practice, individually and through the wider operation  
  • a willingness to travel to the University campuses and other locations.
