Introduction

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH,N) is a private, not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides comprehensive healthcare services. It is the first hospital in East Africa to be accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) from the USA. It is the first hospital in Africa to receive JCI Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC) for management of Stroke and the second, in Africa, for management of heart attack. AKUH,N’s laboratory is the first hospital-based laboratory in Africa to be accredited by College of American Pathologists (CAP).
 

Responsibilities

The CEO is responsible for providing strategic direction as well as leadership towards achievement of the Institution’s mission, vision and values in accordance with established policies. He/she will oversee the overall AKUH,N operations including support services and outreach centres across East Africa. 

The workforce comprises more than 2000 employees. Reporting to the Vice President, Health Services, the CEO is responsible for the overall management of the Hospital including support services and Outreach centres. He/she works closely with the Dean of Medical College, Departmental Chairs, Medical staff, and other University leaders to ensure coordination between academics and service delivery.

  • Strategic Planning and Business Development – Functions as key member of AKU leadership team; Develops short and long term strategic and business plans for the Hospital; Formulates annual operating plan and budget to be presented to University leadership and ensures it is approved by the Executive; Provides feedback to Board of Trustees for decision making purposes
  • Institutional Leadership – Provides inspiring and engaging leadership, that is collaborative, consensus building and motivating, to attract top talent and promote integrated service delivery, encouraging a culture of quality, safety, teamwork and accountability
  • Oversight of Operational Management – Overall responsibility for financial sustainability  of the Hospital and effective management of human resources to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency; Ensures clinical management and administrative teams achieve highest quality standards; Implements and oversees evidence based clinical practices; Encourages programs and systems that assist in developing a healthcare system which can serve as a model for other institutions; Fostering multidisciplinary collaboration to ensure optimal quality patient care; Establishes and maintains a culture that promotes exemplary patient care and fosters professional and personal satisfaction for all staff and physicians / faculty; Ensures that operating units on campus and off-site are working effectively and efficiently, in line with agreed mission, goals and strategies
  • Financial Management and Participation in Fundraising – Overall responsibility for financial sustainability of the Hospital and effective management of human resources to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency; Representation on a need basis, at donor functions and external constituents; Monitoring the budget: FTEs, Non Full time faculty, Budget Variance Report and expenditures as approved during budget planning; Financial management and budget planning; Reviewing data indicators across all areas of responsibility; Planning for and managing current space and renovation / construction projects with other stakeholders; Collaborate on construction activity with East Africa projects management team; Set objectives and ensure consistent optimal utilization of all assets;
  • Legal and Compliance - The Chief Executive Officer has responsibility in collaboration with stakeholders to ensure full compliance with regulatory accreditation agency requirement 
  • Partnerships and Relationship Building – Ensures the AKU culture fosters learning, quality, relevance, impact and promotes access in all operating units; Fosters a culture that encourages open communication, trust and a safe environment; Coordinates activities of the Hospital and teaching programs in cooperation with the Dean Medical college, Chairs, active medical staff and Nursing Programs, operating as it’s interface between service and educational components; Enhance relationship, collaborate and strengthen the strategic relation with AKDN; Represent AKUH, N and build on relations with government bodies and other institutions
  • Performance Management – Leads the goal setting process for all institutional units; Conduct performance appraisal for leadership team of the Hospital; Develops future leadership of the institution; 
  • Marketing and Networking – Oversees and approves all marketing and institutional development activities; Ensures appropriate participation of AKUH, N in AKHS regional programs, including creation of coordinated mechanisms for integration of patient care in the region; Raise the profile of AKU, by contributing to build its market presence and regularly monitor the competition
  • Other – Completes any other responsibilities as assigned. 
 

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in healthcare administration or business management.
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years experience of progressive responsibility in a major academic or integrated healthcare system.
  • Familiarity and experience in health care quality management and maintaining a patient-focused service in a continual learning environment.
  • International experience, including in developing countries, is preferred (but not essential).
  • A strategic thinker who is a motivator of faculty, managers, and staff.
  • Results and systems-oriented.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to plan and execute mandate according to the strategic vision, mission, and values of the institution.
  • Demonstrated financial acumen with the ability to manage costs and revenues.
