Nurses and Midwives are the largest workforce in the health sector in Kenya and Globally. In the Laws of Kenya under Cap 257 quoted as “The Nurses and Midwives Act”, made a provision for the training, registration, enrolment and licensing of Nurses and Midwives, to regulate Education and practice to ensure their maximum participation in the health care of the community and for connected purposes.
In this regard, the Ministry of Health needs to invest more in Nursing and Midwifery profession and practice especially at the community level as we move upwards to clinics, health centres and Hospitals. Therefore, development of the Nursing and Midwifery policy aims at improving services delivered by nurses and midwives in the county and is pertinent, considering emphasis by WHO to countries to implement the “Global Strategic Direction for Strengthening Nursing and Midwifery 2016 – 2020” following 70th WHA resolution which also aims to strengthen the profession in Kenya and the World.
