Introduction

The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) is the leading unit of its type in Pakistan, recognized regionally and internationally for the relevance, quality and extent of its work in support of public health and the development of primary health care systems. It comprises of five major operational units: Epidemiology & biostatistics, Health policy & management, Population & reproductive health, Environmental health, and Non-communicable diseases & mental health.

The Department is managing the Urban Health Program (UHP) - a Primary Health Care (PHC) Programme which works in squat settlements of Karachi. The Programme aspires to contribute to reductions in health inequities and address the underlying socio-economic determinants of health through sustainable community-oriented health and social development initiatives.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:
  • providing delivery of healthcare services (including maternal and child health, as well as NCDs and mental health) at the field sites and record keeping on a regular basis
  • planning and organising social development activities
  • supervising undergraduate, post graduate students, interns and volunteer for Community Oriented Medical Education (COME) activities
  • facilitating all the research activities, including household visits and data collection
  • assisting in all the activities related to restructuring and upgrading of the field sites including management of electronic medical records
  • assisting in digital mapping and household surveys, designing IEC material and conducting health education sessions, mobilising and engaging communities and referral tracking mechanisms
  • collaborating with Community Based Organizations (CBOs) for field-based activities and in organising various health awareness sessions and social development activities in the catchment
  • compiling and submitting monthly/quarterly facility-based report to the concerned authorities and supervisor.

Requirements

You should have:
  • a Graduate degree
  • Diploma in Midwifery/Lady Health Visitor/General Nursing  
  • two to three years’ of related work experience preferably in community-based setting
  • good communication skills in Urdu and English
  • command over major regional languages (Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi or Pashto) will be an advantage
  • ability to take field notes and observations
  • ability to interact with community members and stakeholders
  • basic skills in Microsoft office (especially, PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
  • good counseling and negotiation skills 
  • willingness to work in community settings and travel to the field site on daily basis.
