Job Summary
The Aga Khan University is looking to hire a Senior Librarian who will be responsible for the day-to-day running of library services at the AKU Tanzania libraries, including the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) Library, Institute of Educational Development (IED) and Post Graduate in Medical Education (PGME) library for coordinating the acquisition, organization, dissemination and exploitation of information resources appropriate to the faculty, students and staff of AKU; and to effectively support the teaching, learning and research objectives of the university. In addition, to manage the library services and supervise staff for effective library service delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire information resources needed to support the university’s core business
  • Select and source library books in consultation with the faculty
  • Implement cataloguing and classification of information resources in the library
  • Develop library resource guides (LibGuides) to support teaching, learning and research
  • Preservation and Conservation of AKU Tanzania scholarly works in the AKU Institutional Repository
  • Orient new library users and train them on how to access and use both print and online resources, including academic databases 
  • Promote and market library and information services
  • Participate in the activities of the local University libraries Consortium 
  • Implement library policies and procedure
  • Coordinate staff shifts, mentor staff and interns and monitor the achievement of set goals and objectives
  • Ensure smooth running of the library
  • Assist the Associate University Librarian, East Africa in preparing a budget for the libraries in Tanzania

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or related discipline.
  • Proficiency in ICT
  • Enrolment for a PhD in Library and Information Science will be an added advantage
  • Five (5) years of work experience in an academic library in a senior role
  • Sound knowledge of library management systems and a range of library procedures
  • Familiarity with Tanzania Commission of Universities (TCU) guidelines and regulations for university libraries
  • Knowledge and skills in supporting research in Evidence-Based Practice and Systematic reviews
  • Experience in scholarly writing/publishing with at least two publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Leadership skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to motivate others
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and customer care skills
  • Experience in teaching information literacy
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines
