Introduction

The Aga Khan University (AKU) invites applications for the above position based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The job holder will provide professional counselling and psychotherapy services to undergraduate and post-medical trainees and support the development of mental health promotion initiatives across the University.

Responsibilities

• Deliver effective individual and group counselling and psychotherapy sessions.
• Achieve therapeutic goals with undergraduate, graduate, and PGME students.
• Provide accurate case formulation and diagnosis when applicable
• Maintain comprehensive and confidential case records.
• Ensure adherence to ethical standards in record-keeping and client privacy.
• Contribute to campus-wide mental health awareness and well-being initiatives.
• Develop and execute proactive programs targeting resilience and coping strategies.
• Design and facilitate workshops/training on emotional regulation and stress management
• Support student development through skill-building and psychoeducation.
• Create relevant self-help content to promote psychological well-being.
• Research emerging trends and needs for updated support material.
• Provide timely crisis support following established protocols.
• Manage high-risk situations with competence and care.
• Coordinate care through appropriate referrals to internal/external stakeholders.
• Collaborate with university departments for integrated student support.
• Identify systemic or environmental stressors impacting student well-being.
• Communicate insights and recommendations to relevant authorities while maintaining client confidentiality

Requirements

 

·        Master’s degree in Psychology (preferably MS or MPhil in Clinical or Counselling Psychology)

·        Minimum of two (2) years of formal training in counselling/psychotherapy and psychological assessments

·        Registered Counsellor (where applicable)

·        Minimum two (2) years’ experience in counselling/psychotherapy in educational or clinical settings

·        Experience working with adolescents and adult populations

·        Experience conducting psychoeducational programmes

·        Sound knowledge of counselling and psychotherapy theories and techniques

·        Ability to conduct psychological assessments and prepare reports

·        Fluency in spoken and written English and Swahili

·        Excellent written English skills (ability to develop self-help and educational content)

·        Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

·        High level of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality

·        Strong interpersonal and communication skills

·        Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment

·        Organized and able to work under time constraints
