Introduction

The Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi is seeking an experienced and strategic leader to fill the position of Director Outreach Operations

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director will provide overall leadership and operational oversight of the Outreach Division, ensuring the effective integration of the Hospital’s strategic plan into outreach operations. The role is responsible for developing high-quality, cost-effective, and financially sustainable outreach and selected outpatient services, while strengthening referral networks, partnerships, quality, and patient experience across geographically dispersed sites.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Leadership and Outreach Expansion: Contribute to the development and execution of the Hospital’s overall strategic plan by analyzing the external environment, leading the implementation of outreach strategic and operational plans, expanding outreach activities, establishing satellite clinics, and strengthening referral networks to support an integrated and geographically distributed healthcare system.
  • Leadership of Outreach Medical Centers: Provide overall leadership for outreach medical centers by working with managers and clinics to establish appropriate professional practice structures, monitoring indicators, and governance mechanisms that ensure quality, efficiency, and consistency of services across all outreach sites.
  • Operations, Staffing, and Infrastructure Management: Ensure outreach medical centers are adequately staffed and equipped by overseeing staffing structures, operational indicators, and the functionality and maintenance of medical and other equipment to support safe, reliable, and efficient service delivery.
  • Performance and Talent Management: Drive performance management processes by setting operational targets, conducting staff performance appraisals, identifying training and development needs, and building cohesive, high-performing teams aligned to institutional goals, while working to maintain or surpass EBITDA targets.
  • Networking, Marketing, and Partnerships: Participate in joint AKHS/AKUHN coordination forums, develop and maintain referral networks for outreach centers, and oversee the implementation of marketing activities to enhance visibility, patient volumes, and coordination of care across outreach sites.
  • Financial and Resource Management: Lead the development and management of outreach operational and capital budgets, monitor manpower, FTEs, expenditures, and utilization indicators, and ensure outreach medical centers operate on a financially self-sustaining basis that covers operating costs and generates surplus for reinvestment into hospital and regional programs.
  • Clinical Integration and Decision Support: Work closely with hospital management and medical leadership to reduce costs, enhance revenues, improve utilization, and achieve quality goals by analyzing operational and financial data to inform evidence-based management decisions.
  • Professional, Client-Centered Work Environment: Promote a professional, client-centered, team-based learning environment by participating in corporate service teams and committees, contributing to organizational renewal initiatives, and maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards in all communications.
  • Executive Decision-Making and Performance Oversight: Make and lead key strategic and operational decisions including selection of satellite clinic sites, optimization of staffing structures and operating hours, and continuous improvement of quality measures. Oversee and monitor core performance dimensions such as service volumes, capital and operating expenditure, revenue performance, turnaround times, quality indicators, patient feedback, and staff turnover to ensure sustainable, high-quality outreach operations.
  • Operating in a competitive and resource-constrained environment: Balancing market competition, ageing equipment, and pricing pressures while maintaining quality and safety.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Master’s degree in healthcare administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in healthcare management, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Computer literacy and a working knowledge of healthcare systems and operations.
  • Proven supervisory and managerial experience with progressively increasing responsibility.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Strong strategic, operational, and financial management capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and mentor high-performing teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Proven ability in planning, project management, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare operations, outreach models, and referral networks.
  • Strategic and results-oriented leadership style.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
  • Collaborative and consensus-building approach to leadership.
  • Strong commitment to quality, service excellence, and patient-centered care.
