Balaj was born with transposed main arteries of the heart. His parents were extremely concerned when they were told the defect could be fixed through a complex and highly risky procedure which was only done at AKUH. The treatment cost was way beyond their capacity, but AKU did not let finances become a barrier to the urgent care Balaj needed. He was admitted for treatment and operated upon when he was just 11 days old. Thanks to donors like you, the Patient Welfare Programme (PWP) at AKUH was able to cover 70% of the treatment cost and give Balaj the gift of life. Balaj has recently celebrated his second birthday and his parents are overjoyed. Many children born with heart defects who cannot access timely care do not make it past their first birthday.
